A Gazette Error. — In the current issue of the Government Qatctte, a notification appears relative to the formation of the Cadet Battalion. Therein tho High School is transformed into " Hyde " School. Perhaps the boys may perceive some sort of grim joke in this. Bt Abaph Street Mutual Improvement Sooiktv. — The usual meeting waa held la3t Friday evening, when Mr R. H. Turner gave a lecture on " The Creation," basing his remarks on the first chapter of Genesis. The lecture, which was a most interesting and instructive one, waa listened to with great attention. Next meeting will be devoted to reading and criticising contributions to the " Portfolio."

Magisterial. — Mr Beetham notified from the Bench this morning that in future Mr Whitefoord would not attend at the Resident Magistrate's Court here, his other duties requiring his attendance elsewhere. Mr Weßton, on behalf of the bar, expressed their regrnt, and hoped that an opportunity would be given them of saying farewell, and of expressing* their estimation of him. It was also notified that alter Sept. 1 the Police-courfc held in tho old Provincial Council Chamber will be held every Tuesday, instead of every Monday. Accident. — At the Drillsbed on Saturday, a youth named E. Coombea, a bugler in the Christchurch City Guards, was shot in the foot whilst marking for some of the members of the corps, who were practising with the Morris tube. He was immediately taken to the Hospital, where the bullet was successfully extracted. It had lodged in his heel af tor passing round the side of the foot. From inquiries made at the Hospital to-day it was ascertained that he was progressing favourably.

WhiskSt. — One of the boy's employed in Mr J. E. Pilbtow's atableß at Eiccarton caused some excitement yesterday forenoon. He discovered a bottle of whiskey •which another of the lads had surreptitiously brought into the establishment, and thought he was playing a good joke by drinking the greater part oi it. The spirit made him quite mad ; he jumped into tho waterhole opposite Pilbrow's, and after being fished out, pulled off some of hia clothes, and jumped in again so determinedly that a lad on horseback had to be called to drag him out. As he then threatened to cut his throat, he was carefully watched. This morning he was in his right mind, but was possessed of " a head," an aversion to the name of whiskey, and an idea that he had not the best of the joke.
