Local & General.

The Electors' Association. — A meeting will be held at Cust this evening to discuss the programme of the Canterbury Electors' Association. Mr W. H. Spackman will deliver an address on behalf of the Association.

Inquest. — An inquest was held at the Star and Garter Hotel yesterday afternoon on the body of a child which had ( d'ed rather suddenly. The jury viewed the body, and the inquiry was then adjourned until next Tuesday.

Larkikinisji i.r*TE.nri.A. — The rowdy conduct of larrikins reported as having taken place outside the Salvation Army banacks at Temuka on Saturday evening appears to have occurred on Sunday night. The police have taken the matter up, and tbere is no fear of the annoyance being repeated

Winchester School. — Arrangements have been made for the use of the Mechanics' Institute, Winchester, for the purpose of carrying on school work until the new premisea are built. A room in the master's house will also be devoted to a like purpose. The Education Board have arranged for the necessary furniture.

Afternoon Concert. — To-morrow afternoon Mr A. Towsey gives another of his series of matinees mv.dca.les, for which the vocalists are Mesdames Westmacott and F. M. Wallace, and Mesnrs Fred. Barkas and W. Izard, and the instrumentalists will be Meesrs Towsey and F. M. Wallace. These names are a guarantee for the excellence Gf the programme.

Organ Recital. — Mr Tendall will give an organ recital in the Cathedral on Tuesday evening next. Mr Izard will be the vocalist, and will sing three solos, one of which will be Handel's Aye, " Waft Her, Angels," from the oratorio "Jeptha." Many colonists have heard Sims Reeves' famous rendering of this solo in the Old Country, and may look forward to a great treat on Tuesday next. The Mammoth Minstrels. — A large audience filled the &talls and pit of the Theatre last night to witness the performance of the Mammoth Minstrel 3. The various jokes and conundrums afforded immense amusement, and most of the songs, &c, were encored, Miss Amy Blakie being recalled for the way in which she rendered her song in tho first part, and Messrs Turner, Farting, and Cottier also received encores. There will be another performance to-night, when a completely new programme will be set before the public. Act.— There is at present on view in the Caledonian Society's room, an admirable picture by Mr G. F. Fodor, representing tho celebrated charge of the second division of the 42nd Regiment, under General Hantley, upon the ramparts of Tel-el-Kebir. The painting reflects the highest credit upon the artist, the figures being carefully drawn and full of vigour. Every detail, as regards uniform, is well studied, and the picture gives an, excellent representation of one of the most important battles fought by the Euglish Army. The Dibect Mail. — The mail which left Lyttelton for London in the R.M.S.S. Ruapehu yesterday consisted of 10,902 letters, 822 books, 8908 newspapers, and 210 registered letters, contained in 49 bags.

Wesleyan Church, Te_iu__a. — A social gathering, balled an oyster supper, with Fisk Jubilee songs, took place in the Wesleyan Church, Temuka, on Tuesday evening. There was a fair attendance. After coffee and light refreshments had been served, Mr Job Brown was voted to the chair, and delivered a short address. Several of the Jubilee songs were rendered by the choir, under the leadership of Mr Harrison, and addresses were made by the Revs Martin and Thomas. At the conclusion of the gathering the customary votes of thanks were passed.

Temperance Alliance. — Mr Glover, the lecturer for the New Zealand Temperance Alliance, addressed a large audience at the Volunteer Hall, Temuka, on Wednesday evening. The Rev T. A. Hamilton (Anglican) occupied the chair, and the Revs W. G. Thomaa (Wesleyan) and Dean (Primitive Methodist) were also present. Captain Kissell, of the Salvation Army, occupied a seat on the platform. Mr Glover's address was a forcible and telling one, and was listened to with interest. At its conclusion a number of persons signified their intention of becoming members of the Alliance, and Mr John M'Caßkill was appointed Secretary to the Temuka Branch. Hearty votes of thanks were passed to the lecturer and to the Chairman. During the evening several hymns from Sankey's collection were sung, Mies Blyth presiding at the harmonium. The Industrial Conversazione. — The attendance at the Tuam Street Hall last night was large enough to prove that the Industrial Arts Conversazione is steadily growing in popular favour. A very good musical programme was gone through, songs being contributed by Miss A. Button, Messrs Maitland Gardner, H. A. Adley, and N. P. Lenehan. Mr G. Reeves played a violin obligato to one of Mr Adley's songs. Miss E. Smith gave a pianoforte solo, and accompanied several of the songs, Mr R. T. Searell acting as accompanist to the others. The Garrison Band, under Mr Searell, also played a number of pieces during the evening. Master Falvey, a very little fellow, danced a sailor's hornpipe and an Irish iig in a manner which drew forth enthusiastic applause. The conversazione will be open again this evening, and arrangements have been made for opening the hall to-morrow afternoon.
