Mr Barnett at Tai Tapu.

Mr. W. Barnett, a candidate for the representation of the Akaroa district in Parliament, addressed the electors at Tai Tapu school labt night. About 60 persons were present. Mr Blank, chairman of the School Committee, presided.

Mr Barnett, who was well received, said that he was strongly in favour of retrenchment. He would begin by reducing the salary of the Governor by .£IOOO, then cut down the Balaiies of the Ministers and others in proportion, and reduce the honorarium to members by £50. He thought that the minimum school age should be raised to six years, and that the standards should be limited to five in number. By these means a large sum would be saved to the country. He was a freetrader, but would not interfere with the present protective duties. He was opposed to the Stout- Vogel Government, but would hold himself free to support any strong coalition Government. In answer to questions, Mr Barnett said that he was opposed to making a capitation grant to denominational schools. On the motion of Mr Herrick, seconded by Mr Westlake, a vote of thanks was unanimously passed to Mr Barnett.
