Oxford Licensing Committee.
A meeting of the Oxford Licensing Committee was held in the Courthouse on Thursday, June IG, in compliance with the request of the licensees of the Oxford and Terminus Hotels, to reconsider the question of the closing of those two hotels, all the members being present. Mr Wilding appeared • for Mrs Fisher, the licensee of the Terminu3 Hotel, and Mr Maude for others interested in the house. Both gentlemen addressed the Committee at some length, showing the injustice that would be done to the licensee and others interested in the hotel. Mr Vincent, owner of the Oxford Hotel, also addressed the Committee with regard to his hotel. Two petitions, one in favour of each house, were presented to the Committee, very I argely signed, clearly showing that it would bo against the wish of the ratepayers if the licenses were refused. The Committee retired to discuss the question but did not arrive at a conclusion that day, and adjourned the matter until the following day so that a guarantee could be given to the Committee that another licensee would be found for the Terminus Hotel. At the meeting held on Friday the gnarantee was not forthcoming, and the meeting was further adjourned until Monday, June 20, when the Committee again nut and decided to grant, a renewal of the licenses of both hotels. The Chairman stated that the Committee had decided to grant the request of the petitioners, but that at the next election all the members would stand for re-election, and if elected they would close both the houses, so that the ratepayers would have an opportunity of deciding whether the hotels should be closed or not.
