The Floods in New South Wales.
(Per s.s. Tarawera, via the Bluff.) [Bt Telegraph.] j [from our own correspondent.] INVERCARGILL, Feb. 8. ! One half of the New South Wales wheat crop is reported to have been ruined by the * late floods. The police report states that from 25 to 30 lives were lost in the Tweed ' river, and that the loes of property of all kinds has been great. At Grafton fifteen persons took refuge on a racecourse stand, j and were rescued after being two days ! without food. The storekeepers in North Grafton alone lost —10,000, and the losses of farmers in the district are estimated at £100,000. Immense damage is being done ' to the maize crops. The Government j granted £500 to repair the Btreets of Grafton, and £95 for the relief fund. The waters came rushing down in irresistible • torrents, sweeping everything before them, ' levelling fences, tearing up trees, washing J away buildings, and bursting over the | river banks at points never before reached. I Later reports indicate that the loss of life is not so great as was at first sup- ' posed.
