THE KAIAPOI BRIDGE.

The Kaiapoi Bridge was opened on Saturday evening last at 7 o'clock, to allow the timber laden vessel, the E. U. Cameron, to proceed to Mr Robins' wharf. Considerable difficulty was experienced by the crew in getting the craft through the opening, as, owing to the narrowness of the Bpace, the rigging caught against the raised part. From the traffic being suspended for nearly an hour, quite a crowd of foot-passengers, as well as several vehicles, collected. Some of the bystanders wero found very handy when lowering the lift, as many as thirty- three of the burgesses being counted on it at one time, acting as a counterpoise weight. As this was the firßt occasion on which a vessel had passed through since the erection of the new structure, numerous comparisons were made between the old and new bridge, not at all complimentary to the hatter.
