JVkom the "stab's" bpzcial COBBESFONDENT/] TIMARU, Juhb 12. Great excitement was caused here thiß morning by the sinking of the ship Lyttelton in our harbour — a vessel that has on board 9000 carcases of frozen mutton and ; ■sixty bales of wool from this port. It is I rery difficult to understand how the I accident occurred, as of course all who j can tell anything about the subject ! are very reticent ; but so far aa can be j gathered from outside sources, it seems that j the tow rope on the Lyttelton waß on the : wrong side of the vessel, when she met the i force of the swell after leaving the shelter ; of the breakwater ; and ' those on board, finding her drifting towards the shore, let the anchor go. In the meantime the Graf ton, getting into proper position, and not knowing that the anchor was dropped, began to pull at the Lyttelton ; and the anchor, it is supposed, struck her, for immediately afterwards she commenced to fill, and now lies with her deck about a j foot out of the water.
