The reply of a competitor to a Tourney Problem baring been received at the office cannot afterwards be withdrawn, amended, added to, or altered iv any way whatever. 12. The solution of each problem will appear in the Canterbury Tvmes on the fourth Friday after ita publication, but with a view to maintain the interest is the contest the announcement of solutions by competitors will bo delayed nntil ita conclusion. 13. The prizes will be awarded by two judges to be named by the proprietors of this journal. The judges will also decide q '-options of doubt or difficulty that may arise, and their deoision will be final. 14. In the solution of the ten two-move problems it will suffice to correctly name the flrst move for White. In the solution of the ten three-move Eroblems it will be necessary to clearly point out ow the mate is forced ; bnt all variations need not be shown, nor will points ba awarded for variations, but only for the solution of the problem. With regard, however, to the three extra problems to be set in the event of a tie or ties, the solutions should be as oomplete as possible, as extra marks will be awarded in accordance with their completeness ; and the number of known solutions of these problems will not be named. 15. In sending solutions or attempts, oare must always be taken to forward only the assumed name, as no other can be recotmised. 16. The twenty problems will consist of moder. ately easy two and threo move problems j but those set to decide ties, should any occur, will be more difficult, and may require a greater number of moves than three for their solution. 17. If it shall be notified to the Chess Editor that the solution of a problem is obtainable from any publication before the date upon which it is deliverable by competitors at the Canterbury Timet office, such problem will be cancelled, and another substituted for it. 18. Competitors must receive no aid towards the solutions, either from other competitors, or from non-competitors. The infringement of this rule will disqualify for the receipt of a prize in the present or any future Canterbury Times Tourney.
