WE are very r ratified that the growing popularity of chess and the success which > has attended the three tourneys already held, have j determined the proprietors of this journal to essay a fourth Chess Problem Solution Tourney, to take I place dnring the coming winter season. In framing j tho rules for its guidance, our aim has been to consult and to promote the wishes, as ascertained ! by past experience, ot the majority of chess players j throughout tbe Colony, so as to enlist in the tour ney the largest possiblo number of com- • petito-s. With this objeot somo very important , changes have been deemed necessary, and have been embodied principally in Rules 5, 6, and 14, to ' which the careful attention of our readers iB invited. In past tonrneys, tbe balk of tho competitors, although favourably handicapped, have been considerably distanced iv the race, arising, we believe, mainly from tbe somewhat too difficnlt nature of tbe problems set, and also from the completeness ' of the solutions required. We have now endeavoured to remedy these defects, as will be seen by '■ the ru'rs referred to. Still, we trust tha**, while tho problems to bo set will be found comparatively . easy of solution by players of even moderate abilities, thoy will yet possess sufficient interest to • merit the attention of proficients. j RULES AND REGULATIONS. j 1. The tourney will consist in the solution of twenty problems, ten in two moves, and ten in threo moves, to be published in consecutive numbers of the CnHtorbiiry Times, commencing on , Friday, May 21, IrBB. !2. Six prizes will be givon by tho proprietors of this journnl of the amount of Two pounds ten shillings. One pound ten shillings, < >ne pound, i Fifteen shillings, Ten Shillings, and Seven shillings ! and sixpencj respectively, to be awarded to the i corcrts of the greatest number of points. ! 3.
