SIR GEORGE GREY'S SCHEMES.

TO THB EDITOn. Sro, — In seconding the vote of thanks to Sir George Grey at hia meeting, I did so with an object, and had no doubt bat what I said would be reported ; but as neither of tho papers reported me, but simply stated that I seconded the rote of thanks, I would like tho public to know something of what I did say, which was as follows : — That Sir George Grej, having the welfare of the people of New Zealand at heart, should propound some scheme to give us immediate relief from the present depressed state of which we are Buffering ; to do i something that would furnish work for the ; people, of which there is great need. Sir George Grey eaid ho owed Christchuroh and Canterbury a great debt of gratitude. 1 3aid there was a good opportunity for him to pay back that debt by advocating the construction of the East and West Coast find Nelson Railway by Government throughout New Zealand. By doing this, it would give immediate relief to the people; it would furnish work for thousands of the people, and Christchurch and Canterbury would feel ever grateful to him for so doing. That it was no use advocating a part of the lino, aa we must not break with Nelson. If we get our railway we must have the support of the Nelson people, and if we do not get tho railway as a whole, we shall not get it at all, and if Sir George Grey is in earnest in getting the railway for us, he will not oppose, but will advocate, the construction of the live as a whole. By publishing this letter, you will oblige yours, Arc, A. G. HOWLAND.
