The following letters appeared in this morning's Lyttolton Times: —
EAST AND WEST COAST EAILWAY. TO THB EDITOE. Sir, — At Sir George Grey'a meeting at Sydenham, I put the following question : — Seeing that Sir George Grey has stated that some borrowed money has to be obtained for the development of our public works, will Sir George Grey schedule the West Coast and Nelson Eailway on equal terms with tho Otago Central and the North Island Trunk Eailway, and in the expenditure of such borrowed money, and will he pledge himself to maintain an equitable position for the construction of these lines at equal rates, seeing that Nelson has waited equally as long as the North Island, and such equal progress being the will of the people. Sir George gave me a short, definite answer, as follows : — If it is the will of the people, I must. Now, Sir, I claim the will of tho people haa been repeatedly and explicitly expressed by petition to the House, at public meetings, and by the united action of their members in the House last session. What was fcjir George Grey's action then ? Did he support them to give effect to the will of the people? Will he do bo in the coming session ? We, as Canterbury, Weetland, and Nelson people, watch his actions. Will he be consistent to his answer ? He knows tho will of the people. They will judge him accordingly. — I am, &c., JAS. T. PAETEIDGE.
