"Notwithstanding tho opposition to these hporta they atill draw a largo number of holiday seekers— in fact, yesterday the attendance was larger than for many years past. The number of entries was very satisfactory, and some of the finishes were raally good. Mr Haakina waa once again .Secretary, and proved indefatigable in his efforts. He was ably assisted by Messrs S. Clarkson and S. P. Andrews, who, as Treasurer and Handicapper, worked with commendable zeal. A word of praise must nlso bo awarded to Mr Pengelly, for the careful manner in which he acted as clerk et entries, not making a single mistake during the day. An there were so many events (no less than .35) the prizes for each j could not be very large — they were on an . averago of 35a for first, 20s for second, and • 10i for third. In addition to the money j-.fi/eH numerous valuable cups and trophies vrece given, the donors being his "Worship j th? Mayor (Mr A. Some of the boys who ran in the races for under 10 and 12 years had every appearance of being a good deal older, and the Committee, in future, would do well to be a little more particular as to the age of these youngsters. Saunders, aged G3. who beat another man of his own age by half a yard. As there were 14 prizes for this event, the Com- ' mittee had considerable difficulty in placing the men. The City Heed Band was in attendance, and played capital selections ! during the day. Eoundabouts, swings, ' and suoh-like amusements were well j . patronised. Mr Crooks, as usual, had j oharge of the children's sports, and a merry time he must have had, to judge from the ' . hearty laughter which came from his , special course. The sports began at 12 aharp, and the last race was run just before 6 o'clock, so it was evident the : officials did not let time get the best of them. A protest was entered on account of Robson being, as was alleged, over age. 100 yds Boys' Race, under 10 years. First prize, Iss ; second, 10s ; third, ss ; fourteen entries— H. White, 1 ; H. Petrie, 2 ; G. Clement, 3. A good race ensued between the placed boya. lOOyda Men's Race, handicap (open). First price, 30a ; second, 20a ; third, 10. ; eighteen entries— C. Hulston, scratch, 1; E. Johnstone, Byds, 2 ; J. M'Lean, 7yds, 3. j The first heat was won easily by Hulston, Olliver second. The second heat by M'Lean, ] with Johnstone close up. The final, after j a good race, was won by Hulston by a yard, i Johnstone defeated M'Lean by half a yard for second honours. Time — lOsec. 220 yds, boya under 14 years. First prize, 15s; second, 10s ; third ss; seven entries— E. Smith, 1; E. Bradford, 2; E. Eobson, 3. Won by a yard. 220 yds, boys under 12 years. First prize, 153; second, 10s; third, ss ; five entries— L. Scrimshaw, 1; H. White, 2; J. Eobinson, 3. Won by a couple of yards. 220 yds, boys under 10 years. First prize, 15s ; second, 10s ; third, ss. Fourteen entries— H. Petrie,l ; J. Robinson, 2 ; H. White, 3. In this race there was a vfiry close finish, resulting in favour of Petrie by half a yard. Three Mile Bicycle Eace, for amateurs who have never won a price. First prize, tho Mayor's cup, value £6 63 ; second, Mr Coates' cup ; third, Mr White's trophy — W. H. De Moulin, 1 ; W. Crowe, 2 ; A. Lowry, 3. Lowry held the lead for three laps, when he was passed. by De Moulin. Three laps later Crowe went into second place. The remaindervof the race was run in the same order, De Moulin eventually winning by 40 yards. Lowry was over 300 yds behind second man. Time— l3min 483ec. 440 yds Men's Eace (open). First prize, 60s ; Becond, 20s ; third, IO3 ; seven entries — C. Hslston, 1; J. M'Lean, 2; J. Harwood, 3. Hulston took the lead at the start, but was passed by Toon and M'Lean. The latter soon after went to the front, and coming down the straight looked like winning, until Hulston, putting on a spurt, passed him and won as he liked. Harwood was a good third. Time— ss|sec. 440 yds, boys under 16 years. First prize, 20s; second, 10s; third, ss; eight entries— F. Chisnell, 1 5 J. Olliver, 2 ; E. Scrimshaw, 3. Won by a yard. 440 yds, boys under 14 years. The winner jumped 18ft lOin. Two Mile Bicycle Eace (boys). First prize, Mr Petersen's trophy, value £3; second, Mr Nashelski's cup, valuo £2; third, Mr Keane's cup, value, £1 ; four entries — A. Willmot, 1; A. Caro, 2; J. Carl, 3. Willmot rode in good style, and won by over 300 yds. Unemployed Eace (married men), handicap ; distance, 220 yds j22 entries. There were 14 prizes for this event, ranging from a ton of coal for the first prize, to a leg of mutton for the fourteenth. — M. Saunders, 1. A good deal of excitement and amusement was occasioned by this race, in which there were 22 starters, who were handicapped according to age, the youngest man being placed at scratch, and the others receiving 2yds start for every year by which their ages exceeded his. Saunders, an old man of 63, beat another sexagenarian by about half a yard after a capital race. Vaulting with pole (open). First prize, 303; second, 203 ; third, 103— T. M'Auliffe, 1 ; A. Ashworth and T. Robinson, equal, 2. Winner's jump, 9ft 3in. 880 yds, Men's Race. First prize, cup ; second, 20s ; third, 10s. — J. O'Connor, 1 ; J. M'Lean, 2 ; W. Hancock, 3. O'Connor ran in grand style, and won by 20 yards. M'Lean beat Hanco.k by 10 yards for second place. 880 yds, Boys under 10. First prize, 20s ; second, 10s ; third, 5s 5 six entries — T. Cooper, 1 ; F. Chisnell, 2 ; W. Clements, 3. Won easily. 880 yds, Boys under 14. First prize, 15s ; second, 10s ; third, 53; 21 entries— E. Smith, lj E. Bradford, 2; T. Atkinson, 3. A close finish. Won by half a yard. One Mile (Men's Eace) Handicap. First prize, Coates and Co.'s Cup ; second, 20a ; third, 10s ; eleven entries —T. Smith, lOOyda, 1 ; J. Cusack, 30yds, 2 ; W. Moir, 120 yds, 3. Hoggin held the lead for nearly three-quarters of the distance, when ho was passed by Smith, who maintained the lead and won by ten yards. Cusack and Moir ran a good race for second money. Time — 4min 51sec. One Mile Boys' Handicap, under 10 years. First prize, 20s; second, 10s; third, ss— E. Smith, 1 ; T. Cooper, 2 ; W. Fisher, 3. Won by five yards. Three yards between second and third men. 440 yds Costume Handicap (open). First and second, Messrs Sandstein's and Bowman's trophies ; third, 10s — J. Olliver, 1 ; G. M. M'Court, 2 ; W. Spencer, 3. Two Miles Men's Walking Handicap. First prize, Mr Louisson's cupj second, 20s ; third, 10s ; ten entries — D. Libeau, ser, 1; E. M'Court, 180yd3, 2; J.Thomas, 110 yds, 2. Libeau took the lead in the fourth lap, and was -never afterwards troubled, winning hands down by thirty yards. One Mile Boys' Walking Handicap, under j 18 years. First prize, 30s ; second, 20s ; third, 10. ; nine entries — W. Trcngrove, 1 ; J. M'Court, 2 ; J. Thomas, 3. Trcngrove won by three yards. Two Mile Handicap. First prize, 30s ; second, 20s ; third, 10s — The lap* keeper sent the men a quarter of a mile too far, ' so the prizes were held over until a ineet--1 ing of tho Committee. Barrett came in j first and Reid second. 1 Five Mile Bicycle Handicap, amateurs. ' First prize, Crown Brewery's Cup, value «C 5 ss ; second, trophy ; third, trophy ; nine entries— J. W. Painter, 700 yds, 1 ; F. W. Painter, 900 yds. 2; T. Godfrey, 1200 yds, 3. Four started. Godfrey and De Moulin, the limit men, held the first and second positions for two miles, when F. W. Painter ran into second place. In the eighth lap both the Painters passed the limit men and kept well together. On passing the post the tenth time F. W. Painter was leading his brother by three yards. They rode in this order until coming down tlie straight for the last lap, when J. W. fainter went to the front and won by a yard.
