CALEDONIAN SOCIETY'S SPORTS.

The fourth annual gathering under th« auspices of the local Caledonian Society took place on Lancaster Park yesterday. A long and varied programme of Scotch, national sports was carried out with the same vigour and success that has alwayß .marked the management of this Society. His Excellency the Governor, patron of the Society, arrived on the ground at 2.30 p.no., when the National Anthem was played, and! the pipers paraded in front of the grand 6tand. The delightful weather attracted large crowds of people to the Park, and thei gathering was in every respect most successful. If one event is more deserving oil mention than another, it is the dancing ia costume, in which young Rob Thompson-— also no mean performer on the pipes — carried off the prize. BICYCLE RACEB. Two Mile Amateur Bicycle Race Handicap, for roadsters only. First prize, Messrs Mason, Struthers and Co.'s cup, £'A; second, £2-, nine entries. Eight started— N. F. Hall, 325 yds, 1; W. D. Bean, 325 yds, and A. W. Turpin, 575 yds (equal), 2. W. H. Langdown, who had been placed at Bcratch, did not start. Thore was a capital race at the finish. Turpin and Bean eaoh doing their level best to pass one another, while Hall came first abreast of the tape by only a couple 9f yards. Time— about 7min. Caledonian Society's Grand Handicap Amateur Five Mile Bicycle Race. First prize, Mr J. Deans' cup, £5 ; second, JE3 ; six entries. Five started— C. Recce, 450 yds, 1 ; J. W. Painter, 700 yds, 2. W. H. Langdown (ser), E. Recce (1000 yds), aud D. Johnston (1200 yds), alao competed. The last-named came to grief at the start, and E. Etece did not seem equal to the task of contending with the others with any chance of success. Langdown tried his best to wear down Painter and 0. Et^ece, the latter ! of whom waa going iv good form, and niak- j ing a good race with Painter all the way ; | but, when half the distance had been i covered, one of Langdown's pedals became loose, and he dismounted, and got on auother machine whilo the defect was remedied. The delay and the handicap allowances proved too much for him. There was a grand finish between Painter and C. Eeece, the lattor winning by a yard »?i- so. Time — lGmin ulsec. HIGHLAND CO_H"ETITIONB. Bagpipe Musio, pib.rochs. First prize, JES j second, JE3. Five pipers entered for this competition, which was won by J. M'Donald, who played "The Prince's Salute," D. Campbell, who performed " The Finger Look," securing second prize. Reel o' Tulloch, in costume. First prize, JB3 ; second, £2. Four competed, and the first prize was won by J. Banks, D. Buchanan being second. J. M'Eae, junr., was highly commended by the judges. Beßt Dressed Highlander. First prize, JBS ; second, £2— J. M'Donald, 1j J. Frame, 3. The first prize-taker wore the M'Kenzie tartan, and certainly appeared in a most gorgeous costume. Frame wore the Campbell, or 42nd tartan. The first prize for the best dressed Highland boy was awarded to E. Thompson, W. M'Donald being second, and J. S. M'Eae and J. Brown, two wee Highlanders, who also competed, were each awarded extra second prises. Bagpipe Music, marches and strathspeys. First prize, _£4 j second, £2; four entries —M'Donald, 1; M'Kay, senr., 2. The first prize for bagpipe music, awarded to youths under 14, waa gained by T. M'Kay, R. Thompson being second. Highland Fling, in costume. First prize, JE4; second, _G3 j flvo entries— Buchanan, .1 ; Bankß, 2.— Seauntreubdh dance. First pri.e, £3; second, £2; four entries — Buchanan, 1; Banks, 2. Daly, who threw the caber 33ft, took first prize, and — . Dalton second. The caber was a beam of kauri, 13ft 9in long, and 6in in diameter at eaoh end. ' MISCELLANEOUS. Wrestling, Border style, list. First prize, £8-, second, £i<; three entries — Hudson, 1 j A. Homer, 2. In the final tussle between Hudson and Homer, the latter got an awkward fall, his head striking the ground, and Hudson's head coming into violent contact with it as he fell. Wrestling, Border style, championship. First prize, .£10; second, £s— Dunn, of Patea, 1 ; Hudson, 2. Eobinson, the wellknown Maori wrestler, also competed, but Dunn was too quick for him, and taking advantage of the least slip on the Maori's part, secured two falls out of three with him, and thus put him out. Wrestling, youths undor 17. First prize, £2 ; second, £1. Six lads entered for this event. Homer, junr., secured first prize, and the second was awarded to Mardon. Bayonet Exercise, prize J3lO. Major Tosswill and Captain Richards acted as judges in this contest, for whioh squads from four corps entered iD competition. The following waa tho result : — Lyttelton Navals, under Chief Petty-Officer Arnold, 200 points, 1 j Sydenham Eifles, under Sergeant Anderson, 160 points; Scottish Ei'les, under Lieutenant Anderson, 141 points; Woolston Eifles, under Captain Johnston, 136 points. The winning squad docided to hand their prize to the widow of the late Private Curtin, of the Sydenham Eifles. Menagerie Race. — Only two competitors appeared for this novel event, and ib was doubtful for some time whether the race could be allowed to be run. The President, Mr H. A. Watt, howover, undertook to give the winner a prize of £2. W. Harris, a boy, who had trained a cat to run in front of him when held by two ribbons, and — Drummond, a young man who had been endeavouring to obtain a similar servico from a young goat, took their stand at the starting point. When the word wa3 given Drummond's goat manifested a porvorsenpsu worthy of a Jerusalem pony, and would '/nob budge an inch." The cat, however, was .more tractable, and tho boy with soine difficulty managed to drive her to the winning post. Poor pussy appeared much distressed with fright at the finish. The following are tho results of the minor events : — Obstacle Eace. This event provoked io tB of fun amongst the spectators. The obstacles were of almost every kind that the ingenuity of man, or at any rate a Caledonian Committeeman, could devise.
