Arrest of a Suspected Murderer.
[Per Press Association.] AUCKLAND, Dec. 22. William Sheehan was arrested to-day at Waikomiti, by Superintendent Thompson and Detectives Walker and Twohey, on the charge of murdering hit mother, Mrs Sheehan ; brother, Thomas Sheehan ; and sister, Mary Sheehan, in Castletown, Ireland, in October, 1877. He is about 40, and living with his wife and family on a farm at Waikomiti. He was recognised by the furnished description. He appeared unconcerned. A recent Reuter's telegram stated the warrant had been issued, and Sheehan was supposed to be in New Zealand, j Sheehan arrived here by the Doric on her j first trip to Auckland. He has been work- • ing at the Bay of Islands until the last two months, when he returned to Auckland. ! He bought a farm at Waikomiti last week, i ten miles from Auckland. He bears the ! reputation of being a steady, hard-working ' man. He strenuously maintains his ' innocence, but admits he is the William ■ Sheehan referred to in the newspaper ! accounts. The alleged murderer declares ' that his missing mother, brother, and ; sister emigrated to America. He had ' never seen or heard of the newspaper re- ' ports or cablegrams, not being a reading i man.
