UNION ROWING CLUB.

President's Foubs. This, the most important club race, was also rowed last evening, and produced a most interesting, and about the closest, race ever witnessed on the river. It was also rowed over the two-mile course. The exhibition of rowing given by both crews was fine indeed, Fuller's showing the neater style, and indeed their rowing was almost perfection. From start to finish it was a ; race ; no one had time to " loaf," all working their hardest to win. The result caused considerable surprise, as Fuller, on the strength of his victory at Heathcote last season, was looked upon as a certain winner, but this time he disappointed his numerous supporters, the general verdict being that his crew had not undergone a sufficient course of training to compete successfully against his opponents, who have left no stone unturned to get into . trim for the conte&t. And they deserve ' their victory, for they struggled gamely when many men would have given up. If the donor of the trophy were present he . witnessed a magnificent struggle ; if he were 1 absent he missed what is admitted to have been the greatest contest for supremacy : ever seen on the waters of the Avon. It ' may be mentioned that the times of the two races were taken by an experienced j " clockist," and therefore may be looked upon as correct. The race created great interest, ( between 200 and 300 being present, amongst • whom were a large number of ladies. . Mason deserves a word for his admirable ! steering, and his brother cockswain also 1 steered well. Result : — I Thetis— W. A. Styche, bow ; J. G. ] Rule, 2 ; F. D. Kesteven, 3 ; S. C. 1 Kesteven, stroke; C. Mason, cox ... 1 Thalia— J. Fuller, bow ;R. Shand, 2 ; j F. Styche, 3 ; F. Fuller, stroke ; A. L. Styche, cox ... 2 Time— l2min 21|sec.
