Most wintry weather was experienced on j the Peninsula last night, and this mom ing j the higher hills on the far side of Lyttelton j harbour were plentifully besprinkled with I snow. The newly erected electric fire alarm at Lyttelton is now iv working order. It was tested by the Councillors after last night's ! meeting, and found to work most satisfac- \ torily. i In the Gazette to hand to-day it is notified - that the Christchurch Operative Bootmakers' Society has been registered under : the Trades Union Act of 1878. bo remembered that at the last Synod the matter was warmly advocated by the Primate, and the proposed parish was endowed by the Yen Archdeacon Dudley to the amount of .£155 per annum. Yesterday afternoon a well-attended meeting of the Council of the Acclimatisation Society was held for the purpose of considering the advisability of sending Home some person to obtain and take charge of the salmon ova which various Acclimatisation Societies in the Colony are anxious to procure from the Old Country. The lion J. T. Peacock occupied the chair. It was unanimously decided that Mr S. C. Farr, Honorary Secretary of the Society, siiould proceed to England for this purpose. He will leave by the N.Z. Shipping Company's next steamer. Hitherto all attempts to introduce salmon to this Colony have failed, generally from want of proper care in transit. It is hoped, however, that Mr Parr, from his long experience in the management of fish in this Province, will be able to conduct the enterprise to a successful issue.
