General Gordon.

[Special to Press Association.] [Keceived Sept 2, at 2.40 p.in.J LONDON, Sept. 1, A letter lias been received from General Gordon, in which he states that ho will defend Khartoum until Oct. 15. Four hundred and forty thousand pouuds of the capital in Messrs Money "Wigram's Steamship Company has been returned to the shareholders.

NEW PLYMOUTH, Sept. 2. Frank Howard alias George Lewis, was charged to-day at the Police Court, on a warrant from Wellington, with stealing on August 13, from O'Donnell, in the Bank Hotel, Wellington, a gold watch and nine dBl notes. The prisoner escaped from Wellington to Greymouth. where he joined the schooner Cora, and sailed for Waitara. He was arrested at Waitara by Constable Day.
