The Unemployed.
fr DEPUTATION TO THE MAYOE. A deputation from the unemployed waited upon his Worship the Mayor this morning, for the purpose of obtaining employment through his instrumentality. His Worship expressed his desire to do all that he could in their behalf, and stated that, in accordance with hi 3 promise made to them yesterday, he had endeavoured to secure that the drainage works about to be carried out at the Hospital should bo done by day labour, and by this meaus afford employment. He had waited upon Mr Außtin, the District Engineer, who had informed him that the matter was not in his (Mr Austin's) hands. His Worship had also seen the Chairman of the Drainage Board with reference tothe same matter, aud that gentleman had promised to bring the subject before the meeting of that body to be held yesterday afternoon. The deputation would have seen by the morning papers that this promise had been fulfilled, but that the Board had considered it necessary that the work should be done by tender. The work must, of course, in any case, provide employment for some, and he would make it his business to see the members of the Board and urge upon them, the imperative necessity for putting the work in hand at onco. He would also see Mr March, with a view to that gentleman's communicating with the Government with reference to furnishing the men with work, other than stone-breaking at half-a-crown a yard, for those requiring it. The deputation thanked the Mayor and retired. Subsequently his Worship saw Mr March, and an urgent telegram was forwarded to the Government, requesting them to instruct the authorities at Addington to provide employment for those out of work.
