Rangiora Literary Institute.
The annual meeting of members of the above institute was held last night. There was not a large attendance. The Preßi- [ dent, Mr G. Buckham, occupied the chair, and gave a brief account of the work done by the Committee during the year. The Treasurer (Mr E. R. Good) then read his annual statement, which showed : —Receipts— Rent of hall, .£BO 19s ; loan, .£SO ; Government subsidy, £30 5s 2d ; subscriptions, £39 lis 4d ; sundries, £2 12s ; total, £203 7s Gd. Expenditure — New books, £20 9s 10d; paper, £W 5s lOd; librarian's salary, .£3O 5s ; improvements to building, £28 lis Id; repayment of loan, £51 13s 4d ; insurance and sundries, £39 14s; balance in hand, £1 lGs 16\; total, £203 7s Gd. The assets were put down at £23 8s 4d, and liabilities to the same amount. Mr Fulton moved the adoption of the reports, and also a hearty vote of thank* to the President, Treasurer, and Secretary (Mr Hossack) for their past services. Mr A. H. Cunningham seconded this motion, which was agreed to. The recipients of the vote suitably acknowledged it. The following were then elected the Managing Committee for the ensuing year : — Messrs G. Buckham, T. Boyd, A. H. Cunningham, R. Evans, E. R. Good, J. Hossack, L. Hunnibell, C. I. Jennings, R. Maxwell, G. Shorland, H. Tutton, and W. Waterston. Mi- Good said that he had frequentlyheard visitors to the place express surprise at the fact of the reading room being closed during the day. He could Bee no reason why the room should not be open, and he would move— "That the new Committee' be requested to consider the matter." Mr J. Fulton seconded this, and it was agreed to. The general meeting then terminated. The Committee afterwards met and reelected Mr Buckham President, Mr Good Treasurer, and elected Mr C. I. Jennings Hon Secretary, Mr Hossack declining to again act. Mr Good moved — "That that reading room be open every day (excepting Sundays) between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m/' This was seconded by Mr Tutton and agreed to. The President suggested that certain improvements should be made to the ante-rooms of the hall, and that am extra room should be built at the rear of the library. The funds required for the work — estimated at £40 — he guaranteed to raise independent of the ordinary revenue. On the motion of Mr Boyd it was agreed to have the work carried out, and a eubcommittee was appointed to see to it. The meeting then terminated with the usual compliment to the Chairman.
