ON BOARD THE RUAPEHU. AUCKLAND, March 4. The soundings taken at Tiritiri by Lieutenant Oldham, of H.M.S. Lark, will be taken Home by Captain Brotherton, who left to-day by the Zealandia, and will he available should they be needed in the impending law case between the late owners of the Triumph and the Underwriters. The Cambrian Society gave a grand soiree and concert last evening, in honour of St David's Day. The Mayor presided, and 700 people were present. Auckland's asphalted wharf has' attracted the favourable notice of the Hon Thomas Loader, of the Melbourne Harbour Trust Commission, and that body has applied to the Harbour Board for a tracing of the Queen street wharf. A dinner was given to-night by the New Zealand Shipping Company, on board the Ruapehu. Mr Murray-Aynsley, Chairman of the Company, presided. About 70 sat i down, including members of the Assembly, t Legislative Council, and leading merchants. Sir F. Whitaker made the speech of th« evening in- proposing the toast of success to the New Zealand Shipping Company. The saloon was decorated, and the vessel was lit up with the electric light. It is reported that a stack of barley belonging to Mr Talbot, at Richmond, has been burned, it is supposed by incendiarism. A lad named Braddock, aged 11, was drowned in the swimming baths to-day. He was bathing with other lads when he was seized with cramp. He seized another lad, who was also nearly drowned. When the body was recovered all efforts failed to restore life.
