The Riot at Lyttelton.
♦ The following is the deoision in thii case, briefly reported by telegram in our iisue of yesterday: — The Bench had bo hesitation ia dealing with the ease. Prisoners bad made a most unprovoked attaok on a number of persons holding a religious service. Prisoners cvi dently thought that, because Ljttelton was a seaport town and there was but a small body of polioe, they could oome to the town and do as they liked. Great oredit was due to the inhabitants of Ljttelton for the way they had aiaisted the polioe. But for the faot that, by sending the oase to the Supreme Court, they might ruin the prospects of some of the accused for life, they ,would hesitate to deal is a summary manner with the oase. Prisoners were sentenced as follows: — M'Seveny and Neary were fined £5 each, or six weeks in gaol in default; Harrison and Barns, £3 fine each, or one month* imprisonment; Lord, Johnston, Phillips, Mafsden, Ell wood, Newsome, and Archibald, 20s eaoh, or 14 dajs in gaol. M'Seveny, Neary, Burns, Phillips, Mareden, and Archibald eleoted to take their respeotiTe terms of imprisonment instead of paying the fines.'
