The seoond contest (48 hours) between Edwards and Scott for Mr White's £100 prize commenced at ten last night. At eleven this morning Scott had walked 64 mile?, and Edwards 6_f miles. At 2 p.m. Soott had covered 76 miles, and Edwards 72.. MAJOB ATKINSON BETUBNING. The Government have reoeived a telegram from Major Atkinson, stating that he proposes leaving for New Zealand by the next trip of the Hauroto from Sydney, arriving at Wellington on Deo. 23. The Hon Mr Bryce has arrived at Kawhia. It is expeoted that he will be detained there some weeks, arranging matters in oonneotion with the Native Department. It is probable that Mr Bolleston will leave here shortly to meet Mr Bryce. In the Appeal Oonrt, judgment was given in the case of the National Bank v. Ward (limaru), the judgment for the Bank being set aside. NELSON, Deo. 7. ANOTHBB TOTAL WBKOK. A small vessel painted green, of about 15 tons, supposed to be the Southern Cross, is ashore on the Neleon side of the Frenoh Pass, and is a total wreck. Nothing is known as to the whereabouts of the orew, but as the Southern Cross waa owned by Mr Turner — who would be in oharge with one man — he would have been on his way from the Sounds to Nelson, and may probably have returned home by boat.
