■» A speoial meeting of the Popular Sports Oommittee was held yesterday in the Oity Oouncil Chambers; present— Mr S. P. Andrews (in the ohair), Messrs Leahy, Crooks, Prudhoe, Beese, Money, Turner, Samuels, and Haskins (Hon Seoretary). Messrs Money, Phipps, Watts, 0. Samuels, T. Stapleton, junior, and Jaikes were eleoted members of the Oommittee. The Ohairman explained that the -meeting waa apeoi_ll- to consider whether or not the sports should be held on Boxing Day. Mr Prudhoe moved— "That the sports be held this year on Boxing Day." The opening of the Exhibition on Deo. 17 would be fatal to the sports being held on that day. Mr Beese seoonded the motion. Mr Turner feared that the ohange in the day would be fatal to the anniversary oommemoration. Mr Orooks moved— "That the sports be held on Deo. 17." He believed that with the funds in hand a fete oould be given to the ohildren, who should not be allowed to forget tbe anniversary. He would guarantee, with somjfe other gentlemen, to get up a good ohildren's programme. Mr Turner seconded the amendment. He thought the opening of the Bxhibition would not at all interfere with the success of a ohildren's fete. Mr Beese would not have the grownup people negleoted. The Friendly Sooieties' fete was to lapse this year, and Boxing Day would thus be vaoant for general sports. Mr Prudhoe supported the resolution. He knew that Mr Louisson was going to give three guineas, and had ne doubt others would subscribe. The Friendly Sooieties would, he thought, hand over a trophy they had, and he believed the sports oould be made a suooesa on Boxing Day. The Ohairman suggested that possibly the Government wonld oease to give a general holiday if the sports ceased to be held on Anniversary Day. There was, bowever, nothing to bind the Oommittee to any particular day. Mr Money supported the amendment. He saw no reason for postponing the sports. Mr Samuels thought it would be a mistake to allow the Oaledonian Sooiety to rob the Oommittee of their day. He would like to see a larger meeting, and hoped an adjournment to an evening sitting would be made. Mr Leaby had intended to move that the meetings should be held in the evening. After some little further disouseion, the meeting resolved to adjourn till i'uesday, Deo. 4, at seven o'olook, when it is hoped there will be a large attendanoe of those interested in the sports.
