Canterbury Rowing Club.
♦ The following is the annual report of the Canterbury Bowing Olub, to be submitted at the forthcoming general meeting of the members.— Ihe Committee have muoh pleasure in submitting the twenty-third annual report and Treasurer'a statement of receipts and expenditure, duly audited. It will bo seen on examination of the latter that the expenses havo been unusually heavy, the principal items being now boats, £106 19s 4d, permanent investment shares, £61. Ihe amount for prizes, £60, and aotount of Swaddle and Winship, £85, will be a oharge on the revenue for the coming year. The number ef members on the roll, 163, including six life and 24 honorary members, shows an inorease of 13 sinoe the last report. Thirty-nine new members were eleoted during the year. Ihe four-oared racing boat, although ordered from Swaddle and Winship in time for the commencement of the season, did not arrive until January j the builders, in order to make up for their delay, shipped her in a steamer vid Melbourne, instead of, as instructed, by a direct sailing vessel, thereby seriously increasing the oost. Your Committee considered that the Olub ahould not pay the extra amount, and therefore availed themselves of Mr B. D. Thomas' presenoe in England, to arrange the matter with the builders, which he has full power to do, and a credit has been opened for him for £35. Iwo stump-outriggers were also received from Salter, of Oxford. Your custodian, Mr Bees, built for the Olub a racing stumpoutrigger, whioh has proved a great success ; the Club may be congratulated on possessing the services of so skilful a builder. The annual Club ball took place on Oot. 27 ; though well attended, it did not clear expenses, there being a deficiency of £15. The Olub was represented during the season at the Akaroa, Lyttelton, Heathooto, and Kaiapoi Eegattas with considerable sucoess • dt the two latter the senior fours were won by our Club orew, the total of prize money for the year amounting to £82 19s. Ihe fourth annual raoe with the Otago Bowing Olub took place on the Taieri Biver in February, and was won. by your representatives. The Otago Bowing Club desire, for the future, to row the raoe in inrigged boats instead of as heretofore, in outrigged, they stating tbat the water at Dunedin is not favourable for outrigged rowing, and consequently placing them at a disadvantage. Your Committee consider the change should be agreed to. A proposal to the •tar Club to row a similar matoh was deolined, they having already arranged an annual race with the Union Club. Ihe Club races. were only fairly supported, and your Committee consider that some material change should be made, as the olass of races that have lately been on the programme have not attracted the number of members they ought, considering the value of the prizes offered. The thanke of the Club are due to Messrs Harman, Thomas, Blakiston, and Douglas, for prizes presented by them. Ihe following is a list of winners of Olub and other raoos:— Sbkiob Fer/BS. — • President's Cup— J. O. Jones, T. Griereon, B. Bidinge, S. B. Wright. Maiden Fo*o*Bß.- 0. Edgar, W. C. Haultain, M. Iho inrigged* four Kiwi and racing fourlamesis your Committee have not been able to dispose of. Iho stock of cars and scull* ia small, but with oare should last tho Club during the season ; in view of the present liabilities your Committeo did not oonsider it advisable to order a fresh supply. Ihe ehed and plant ore insured for £975. Your custodian, Mr Beeß, Btill attends to the Club property with his usual care, your Committee regret that the funds did not permit of his getting the bonus authorised by the. last general meeting, but recommend ono be given him during the coming season. The lawn tenuis ground, for whioh a sum of £10 was voted, had to be abandoned, as your Committee found on investigation that it oould not ba formed under four times the ainouut.
