Fatal Accident.

DEATH OF MB JAMES WALLS OF EAIAFOI ISLAND. As Mr Frederick Herridge, oarrier, of Woodend, was returning towards (Kaiapoi at 10 o'olock last evening, he discovered Mr James Walls lying in a state of unconsciousness on the culvert . opposite Mr Pashby's residenoe. A horse and trap were found near, the trap being considerably smashed. Mr Herridge, with assistance, removed Mr Walls to Mr Pashby's house, when his friends and Dr Ovenden wero immediately sent for. Dr Ovenden, in consultation with Dr Chilton, pronounced the oase to be a severe form of apoplexy, and held out no hopeß of reoovery. The unfortunate gentleman never regained consciousness, and expired at 10.30 a.m. thia morning. An inquest will be held in due course. It may be mentioned that Mr Walls had just returned by train from Ohristohurch, having been there to procure a passage to Sydney in the Wakatipu, whither he was proceeding to arrange the transit and sale of some horses. He had left Kaiapoi in his trap, for his home at St Helena, at : about 8 o'clook, in apparently perfect health. The untimely death of Mr Walls has cast a gloom oyer the whole distriot, where the deceased wae not only muoh respected, but even beloved. His loss will be keenly felt in many ways. The deoeased was a genial, kind, and good man, a praotioal farmer, and an enthusiast in the welfare of his distriot, and adopted oountry. Ab a breeder of draught stock, Mr Walls' name has widespread notoriety, and the many persons who have been conneoted with him in this partioular will concur ia the opinion that the Oolony has sustained a severe loss. Mr Walls was one of the old colonists. His age was 54 years.
