Lata yoaterday tha Government received a cablegram from tho Agent-General to the effect that no tenders had yot been reoeived for tho Direct Steam Servioe. The cablegram was dated Monday, May 1, on whioh day the time for receiving tenders closed. Up to about noon to day no further information had beon received by the Governmont on the subject. Mr M'Lean, a candidate for the Inangahua seat, returned to Wellington this morning, having thrown up the sponge. He informs me that ho arrived od the field too lato. Manj electors had already pledged themselves to support Mr Wakefield's candidature, and could not therefore recede from their promise. It is said that Mr Wakefield's requisition waß framed by Mr Weston, who worded it in such a wtiy that thoße who signed it pledged themselvos unconsciously, perhapa, to support him. Finding he had no chance, Mr M'Lean did what ho oould to advance Mr Shaw's cause, and then Had the field. James M'Kay, bedroom steward of the Penguin, was arrested thi. morning on a charge of robbing tho portmanteau of a saloon paßsonger named Adams while on the journey from Picton. Tho articles alloged to have boen stolen consist of a gold soarf pin, a silk handkerchief, &c. Iho priconer waa remanded.
