The jury retired, and after a short deliberation brought in a verdiot of " Not guilty of the murder of Lord Cavendish and Mr Burke." AMSTERDAM, Mat 1. The International Colonial Exhibition was opened here to-day with great eclat. The various Colonial Courts are well arranged, and make a splendid show of the products of the Colonies. AUO_wLAND,Mat2. The police intend taking action under the Gaming and Lotteries Aot against the keeper of the Chinese gambling house in Wakefield street. 'iho Candle Manufacturing Company's machinery has arrived. The balance-sheet showed a net profit for the year ended March 31 of £11,C63, 3s 2d, or, inoluding the balance from the previous year, £11,618 Bs.9d. Appropriation : payment of dividend for the six months ending Maroh 81, at the rats of 10 per cent per annum, £2607 4a 6d; written off for depreciation, £1000] amount oarried to Inßuranoe fund, £2600; balance to new account, £1053 19s 9d. The Railway Commission's Programme. The West Coast Bailway Commission visited Brunner yesterday, and viewed the coal mines and other works. There they re* ceived a Bailway League deputation last night, and took evidence. The Commission left Greymouth at half-past four o'olock this morning, proceeding to No Town, Lake Brunner, Teramakau, Hurunui, Saddle Lake, Somers, and Hurunui river ; thence to Amuri plains ; then vp the Waiau to the junction of the Hope. Thore the party will separate, half going to Beofton direct, via Ada Saddle, and the' other half proceeding to Ahaura by the Amuri Saddle. Both parties will meet ab Beefton about May 15, whore they will take evidence. They will afterwards proceed to Westport, taking evidence thero, and return* ing to Christohurch either by Nelson or Hokitika aa opportunity offers. bViV3&lB&%ftS& DDNEDIST, Mat 2. At the University last night, Mr Stout, on behalf of the subscribers, presented to the institution the subscription portrait ot Mr John Hislop, Secretary for Eduoation. Dr Stuart announood that a cablegram had been received intimating that Mr Stuart had been oreated L.L.D. by the University of Edinburgh. A movement is on foot to obtain portraits of Sir Jobn Bichardson and Mr Macandrew for the University hall.
