AUCKLAND, July 4. faergaant M'Govorn has received intimation from the Superintendent of Police that all moneys advanced by him (and they are considerable) for the capture of Winiata, although totally unauthorised expenditure, will bo refunded to him at once. The matter was undertaken sololy on M'Govern's own responsibihty. r

It is doflnitely settled that H.M.B. Nelson will coal at Whangarei. Several trials have been made on board with Newcastle, Russell, and Whangarei coal, and the latter is the most suitable. She will require 900 tons, and it is said there are facilities for taking in any quantity in two days at Whangarei. The Fapatoitoi fire is believed to have been accidental, and there is no suspicion of foul play.

Tha potition forwarded to Wellington against the removal of the Native Lands Court to Wellington \ra* signed by lawyers, business men, and citizens. It ie intended that Mr Swonson should present it to the Housoof Representatives.

WELLINGTON, Jclt 4. At the Supreme Court to-day, James William Elliß, aged 22, was, without hesitation, connoted of a most brutal criminal assault on a girl aged 11 years, at Greytowu. Judge Bichmond, in pawing sentence, said :— "You have been convicted, on tho clearest evidence, of one of the most brutal caseß I have ever had to deal with as a criminal Judge. I must raako you an example. Your crime is one that disgraces human nature ; it is the crime of the brute, and you must receive the punishment of a brute. The judgment of the Court upon you is— That you be kept in penal servitude in the Colony of New Zealand for the term of twelve years, and further, that you be twice whipped, receiving at each whipping 80 Btrokes with the instrument commonly called the cat-o'-nine tails."

The enquiry into the lots of the Wesfcport is still proceeding. The evidence to-day was not important.

A gas explosion occurred in the Customhouse this morning. A . messenger named Walters on opening the office smelt gas, and at once opened the windows and doors. After a short time ho struok a match to light a fire, when an explosion occurred, smashing one door and melting the indiarubber casing of the bell wires. Walter* wai burned about the head rather severely.

The football match between the Wellington College team and the Town Olub was won by the latter, Seymour obtaining a goal just before time was called. The ground was very wet.

GREYMOUTH, Jult 4.

A 251 b salmon was teen to jump to-day beneath a bridge over Bed Jack's creek. The gentleman who observed the fish being well aoquainted with salmon at Home, there could be no mistake as to the description of the fish, which jumped fully five feet clear of the water.

An unusually heavy lea has been rolling in during the last few days.

The rock borer at Reefton is doing good work, and coming into great favour. Considerable bußineßs is being done in the scrip of outside claims, and a good deal of entirely new and untried ground is being taken up.

Richard Beattie, the husband of the woman found dead in a water-courea near Peebles, has been arrested by the police on suspicion of having caused her death.

DUNEDIN, Juit 4.

The ship City of Perth was submitted to auction to-day. The bidding started at £2600 and reached £5200, at which she was passed in.

At the Benevolent Asylum enquiry the evidence was nearly all favourable to the manager. Mr Quin himself stated that ho had been eleven and a half years in the police force, and seven years a Provincial Govern* ment servant. When he left the force he was Senior First-Class Sergeant, and during his service was only reprimanded once, the matter being a very trivial one. He became Master of the Institution in 1874.

Agnes Phillips was sentenced to fourteen days' imprisonment for stealing a shawl from a hawker, while exhibiting his goods to her. * William Mandenon, arrested at the Bluff with £39 on him, charged with wife desertion, was brought up to-day, when it was arranged that ho Bhould deposit £19 10b, and pay 10s per week.

As some doubt exists whether Town Boards or County Councils are entitled to the licensing and dog tax,, the Bruce County Council and Kaitangata Town Board have agreed to test the question in a friendly suit.

At a meeting between the Finance Committee of the Harbour Board and importers, it was agreed to abandon ad valorem dues, and substitute a maximum tonnage rate of Ss. The dues oolleoted by tho Board for six months show an increase of £4139 17s 4d compared with the same period of the previous year.

A fisherman named Kirdness borrowed a boat for fishing in Waihola Lake. 'J ho boat has been found, but nothing has since been heard of Kirdnees, who ia supposed to have fallen overboard.

A complaint has been made to tbe Aooli> matieation Society that the deer are doing great injury by barking the trees near Palmoraton, about forty miles from Dunedin. An open season for this big game will probably be demanded ore long.
