WANGANUI, Jtux 3. A fire broke out in Wakefield and Hogg's chemist shop la*t night. The shop and the stock were entirely destroyed. Mr Hogg narrowly escaped. The stock was insured in the Colonial for £800, and the buildings in the South British for £250.
WELLINGTON, Jttlt 3. Meßsrs Batkin and Stock, of Wellington, have purchased in England the 3-ton cutter racing yaoht Gamma, built by Messrs Watkins, of Blackwall, from designs of Mr Manning, engineer to the West and Sast India Dock Company. Her model was shown at the Exhibition of shipwrights' work, and she has won the only four matches she has been entered in. She carries 2 tons 18 cwt of lead on her keel, and no ballast. The coßt in London ib upwards of £300. She oomes out in the Pieione, on a cradle specially constructed..

A most-interesting ceremony took place tonight at St John's Lodge, E.G., when' medals given by- tho Lodge were distributed to those' engaged in saving life on the occasion of tho wrecks on May 14, Mr A. J. Parsons, W.M., presided, and delivered a very. impreßsiva addreßß. The medals were handed to 40 men by Mrs Parsons, and three more are to be Bent Home to men who have left the Colony. Mr fid ward Wukefield responded! on behalf of the recipients. The medals, which cost fully £80, bore suitable inscriptions. . The Masonio Hall waß crowded to witness the presentation. , Tho weather set in veiy wet this -afternoon from the- south-west.
Over 400 birds will be shown at the South Canterbury Poultry Association's coming; show. . A number of entries have been received from Ohristchurch and other outside places*

At a meeting of the Artillery Company objection was taken to several of tho new Volunteer regulations. The period of service was objected to. It was suggested that theofficers commanding should havo pow«r to nconpt tho resignation of any member of' a corps on good reasons being givon. Tb> regulation fixing twenty dajlight drills of three hours 64 eh was also objected to, as- likely to provent anyone engaged in business or at work joining tho force. , It was thought advisable that companios should hare a voice in the appointment of officers to command them, upon, tho person nominated passing a satiufactory. examination.

lof &rmation has been received 1 that a portion of the farm buildings of Mr J. S. Anderson, at TuturauJhave been destroyed by fire. The buildings:, were insured for £200 in the New Zealand' Office. At Winton ', Plains several farm jiuildings belonging to |Mr George Crosbie Vrere destroyed by fire, the loss being about £550, and tho insurance £160 in the Now Zealand Office.
