LYTTELTON MAYORAL ELECTION.

TO THF EDITOB OF TKE STAR. Sib, — Ambition is commendable when tempered with discretion, but where is Mr 8. R. Webb's discretion in upsetting the equilibrium of his colleagues by wishing to assume tho lead, when he ought to know (und probably does) that they have no confidence in him as a leader. Neither have tho ratepayers, if I may take for a guie'e the very large "minority he found himself in at the last election, and under precisely the same circumstances. I don't see how he can hope for proselytes when ho is not a whit tho further advanced in usefulness to the ratepayers, but in fact has taken a retrograde movement, for since then tho business motions that he haß brought before tho Council hay« been of such an objectionable nature that they failed to secure even a seconder. Well, under the circumstance?, one naturally casts about for a reason of his oppos tion to one who has been so long allied to the prosperity of our town ana the welfare of its inhabitants, and I think the electors must presumably take it that his candidature is simply urged on by a certain few as a political animus, ignoring altogether his fitness for tho Mayoral chair, and knowing the predominance of his ambition, he has become an easy prey. I certainly do not wish to give offence to the judgment of the generality of the ratepayers by reminding them of their duty of retaining our present worthy mayor in his office by their votes, but simply to caution the unwary against any political sophistry that may be urged against him. — I am, «fca, fl. V. MORGAN. Lyttelton, Nov. 28.
