LYTTELTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The uaual meeting of the Council was hold on Monday ; present — His Worship the Mayor, Councillors Smith, Weyburn, Grubb, Webb, Garforth, Beed, Hawkins.

The Clerk reported having rooeived £43 7s since laßt meeting.

COBBESPONDENCE,

The following was read ; —

From the Public Works Offico, stating that the Government offered the sum of £250 as compensation for the pieco of land at the foot of St. David's street, taken for railway purposos. The M&yor stated that, having consulted some of the Councillors on tho matter, a lettor had been written to the Government accepting the offer.

It was resolved thafc the action of tho Mayor bo approved. From Mr James Burnott, Apsistant Engineer, enclosing an account for £47 17s od for rails lent the Couucil by tho Bailway Dpp.ii tment.

The Clerk was instructed to acknowledge tho receipt of tho letter. From Sydenham Borough Council, asking for information relative to tho officers of tho Council, salaries paid them, number of workmen, amount of rates collected in the borough, kc. The Mayor stated that the necessary information hud bsen supplied. Leave of absenco waa accorded to Councillor Macdonald.

ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £138 2a 9d were pasßCil for payment.

WATBU SUPPLY. The foreman of works reported that work of connecting the extra wells at pumping station with the main well would be finished during the week, and that ho considered that tho supply of water would be increasod by one half. The Engineer at tho pumping station sent in a plan for pumping direct from tho wells to the mainß, so as to keep the water free of insect life. Ho reported as usual the condition of the pumping Btation. The Engiueor's plan waß handed ovor to tho Water Supply Committeo, for them to roporfc on at the next meeting. JIUISANCES. Councillor Macpherson drew attention to the filthy state of a vacant section on tho north sido of London street.

Councillor Hawkins spoke of the nuisance arising from the sewago from the houaes at tho end of London street being thrown on the ground. Councillor Macpheraon also pointed out a dirty section noxt the Mitre. The Inspector of Nuisances was requested to sse to these places at once. Councillor Macpherson drew the attention of the Council to the section at tho back of Joyce Town being covered with gorse. Now that fche dry weather was sotting in tho adjacent properties wero in considerable danger Bhould tho gorse take firo. Ifc was resolved — "Notico be served on owners of sections fronting on roads where gorse is growing to clear the same." ASPnALTE. Councillor Smith spoko of the necessity of repairing the asphalte footpath in London street. LIGHTING. Councillor Garforth pointed out tho need of a lamp at the extreme eastern end of Norwich Quay. Referred to the Lighting Committeo to report on. BATHING. Councillor Webb thought ifc was a disgrace to the town not having a proper bathing placo. It was explained that the matter was before the Council lasfc year, bufc ifc was found thafc the funds of the Council would not allow of anything being dono in tho matter. Councillor Webb spoko of tho injustice dono to shopkeepers by the number of hawkers that daily visited tho town. The Mayor said the matter had been before the Council on several previous occasions.

BEDUCTION. Councillor Webb moved the notico of motion Btanding in his name — "That the salaries of the Town Clerk, Foreman of Works and Engineer bo reduced 12£ por cent. Councillor Smith seconded the motion pro forma. Afc the pame time he announced his intention of voting against tho motion, as he was opposed to reduction of wages. No discussion took place m the question, and on tho motion being put :o the Council it was lost, the mover alone v ling for it.

A special meeting of tho Council was held prior to the ordinary meeting, when the proposed by-law for regulating the driving of cattle was adopted.
