The East Sydney elections excited great interest, bein£* the first in which the abolition of denominational schools, as proposed in the Education Bill before Parliament was made a test point by candidates. Mr H«nwick was supported by non-sectarian, temperance, and dissenting parties, and duly elected, beating Mr Tooth, who was supported by the Roman Catholics and Anglican public. Mr Doner, ex Congregational minister, and Mr Dalveen were also candidate?. Archbishop Vaughan recommended Mr Tooth's candidature. Two eettlers near Borrowa were arrested on a charge of feloniously shearing sheep, the property of a neighbour. The Premier yesterday introduced a Bui declaring lands set apart in the early days for church and school purposes, the income from which is at presont mostly among the Anglican, Boman Catholics, Presbyterian, and Wesleyan Churches, shall henceforth be Crown lands and dedicated to public institutions. These lands are very extensive and valuable. Mr Wentworth Groy'a stud has been sold at auction. Goldsborough's brother fetched 150 guineas, the Hon J. Whyte was the purchaser; Chrysolite was bought by Mr Ellis at 1050 guineas; Sapid ' Thy, 500 guineas; Tenlong, 750 guineas. Tho bidding was not spirited. The inhabitants of Beethrunga have made a very handsome presentation to Constable Myles, who was one of the nine that distinguished themselves by capturing the Wantabadgery bushrangers. Tho presentation consists of a heavy gold curb, to which is attached a medal, the size of a florin.
