THE OLD MEN'S HOME, ASHBURTON.

Itisgratjfjiogtolearn that thearticles which •have reflenfly*appeared in this journal, and in -tha Aihburton Mail, have effected some good. •On inquiry yesterday at the Home, our representative was informed that several donations have lately reached the Superintendent, consisting of monoy, clothing, and books for the library. Some orders for the pretty door mats have also been received. It is these -orders for work tha,t. the old men chiefly wantr-the-. means of earning a little money by their own exertions. Some, at least amongst 'the inmates are believers in self help, and the belief; is one that is deserving, of every -encouragement. It maybe mentioned that -the mats referred to require an immense •number of Bcraps of cloth to manufacture, and the aupply of this material at the Home ->ia very, nearly exhausted. Donations from tailoring and outfitting establishments of pieces of cloth (no matter how small), will be gratefully received by Mr Maddison, the •Superintendent, who is commendably anxious to provide as much employment for his • charge* as possible. He intends, should suffi- ■ cient encouragement offer, to commence the manufacture of horse cloths, rick cloths, tarpaulins, corn bags, &c, &0., Ac. These articles .are always useful, and should command a ready sale. If the publio will only help, the Home may in time be made self-supporting, and the inmates, while earning wages for. themselves, be kept busily employed, and instead of banging listlessly about all day, would find they had discovered something to live for. We would remind our readers that . communications respecting work, or enclosing subscriptions, may be addressed to the Superintendent of the Home, Ashbuiton, or to J. E. March, Esq., Charitable Aid office, • Ohristchurch. ;
