I The Alleged MisMANAGHMBNr of thb Institution under ths Staff.* I
Sept. 28, 1878. 8. The Secretary read a report from which we take tho following extracts : — "Sir, — Fn a letter, which I had tho honour to address to you on Augnst 29, with the view of comparing the oast of the Christchurch Hoipital with that of Dunodin, I gathered from tho figures as shown in the Hospital books that, the average number of patients had bpon 92 for tho six months ending June 30, 1878. As this number was considered excessive, it was found that the only way to arrive at the correct figures would be by going through the daily diet returns. I have accordingly to roport that this has been done, and I now lay before tho Board a ' return, giving the number of patients in the j Hospital each day during tho abovo-named period. The average number is shown a's 72. I must, however, point out an important fact, and it is this. The averago number of patients, according to the daily diet return 13 72, but the average number of diets issued was 83 £. The average co3fc of each patient wa«, at Dunedin, 2s lljd per day, and afc Christchurch 3s Hid por day; in both cases this includes medicines, Ao., dispenßod .to outpatients, gaol, lunatic asylums, and charifablo institutions. - - - ■ - • "J.E.
