COMPROMISE SUGGESTED BY GOVERNMENT I AND RBFUSKD BY BOARD. I
In consequence of tlio resolution for fcho I cancellation of tho appointment of the staff, I the members of the staff hold a meeting, and I communicated with the Government. As a I result of that action on tho part of the staff, V tho Hospital Board held a moeting at the I office of Mr J. E. Brown. Feb. 22, 1879. "13. Tho Chairman, said that tho meeting had been hurriedly called, and ho thought it much nearer than the Hospital. " Dr Turnbull objected to a hole-and-corner meeting of this kind." The following telegram from the Hon G. S. Whitmore was read : — " Urgent. Have received from medical staff letter requesting me not to go back from my offer to rc-appoint them till end. of year, with which professed themselves satisfied. Having regard to late resolution of Board, j and not wishing to bo discourteous to staff, } propose rc-appointment for six months only. | Meanwhilo, about Juno, Board could advertiso for applications to form new Board (staff) ? to take effect from first September. Please consult your colleagues. I will be obliged by this compromise. Mr Brown movod—" That the Board renew ' its recommendation advising tho Government rto cancel the appointment of the Medical Staff, with a view to the Board inviting offers • of attendance from duly qualified men resi- • dent in Ohristohuroh." Messrs Brown, Allwright and Ick in favour, and Mr Booth and Dr Turnbull against. The Chairman held that the Board had the ontiro management of the Hospital, excepting the modieal duties, and it showed the nocessity for a Board of this description when the Hospital staff themselves recommended it."
