MERCHANT SHIPPING.
A return has been issued showing thd nnnibor and tonxage of the sailing and stea'n vessels belonging to the United Kingdom which have been engaged in the home and foreign trade during the past year ; and also the number of men and boys employed in these vessels. Tho number of, hailing vessels was 16,701, having a tonnage of 4,076,098, and employing 120,085 meu and bbja. There were 3390 Bteam vobsolp, having a tonnage of 2,180,026, and employing 75,550 men and boys. In the number of sailing vossels there was a decreasp of 3261 03 compared with the preceding? jear, the tierrease in tonnage being 616,655; and in the number of men and boys eagaged 25,079. In steam vessels, on the other hand, them wai a considerable increase, 1150 more steamers hiving been enga/ed, with tin in* creoso of 1,120.057 in tbe tonnage, at-u of 2C.715 in the number of men and boys employed.
