LYTTELTON REGATTA.
A meeting of tho Regatta Committee was hold at the Colonists' Hall on Thursday evening. Mr E. Puflett, Vice-Commodore, in the chair. Twenty-two members of Committee were present. The Chairman stated that the Grat business was to consider the notico of motion ru tho abandonment of tho regatta. lie was very glad to see an improvement in the attendance, and might inform the meeting that tome of the Licensed Victuallers had taken up the matter, and had been round to the hotel-keepers in the placo, all of whom, with ono exception, had promised subscriptions towards the fund. He had togelhor with Mr •Rich, been round the town, and they calculated upon being able to raise about £120 in
tho Port. Tho notice of motion was then -withdrawn, and tho programmo decided upon, full particulars of which will be found in our advertising columns. A telegram from Mr H. Allwright, M.H.U., was read, accepting tho office of Uornmodoro.
A letter was read from Mr P. Cunningham, stating that as he would be away from ChristohuroK for some tiuio ho would be unable to giro as much personal attention to matters relating to the Regatta, as he could with, but that Mr Sinclair would boj to the collection of subscriptions, &o. Another letter wns read from a gentleman in' Ohrißtchuroh, Baying that much interest was felt in that city regarding the regatta, and that his opinion was that liberal subscriptions would be forthcoming ; also offering to assist in canvassing for the same. In reply to a question regarding the possibility of obtaining a gant from the Government, Mr Murray- Ayrisley, who was present, said that tho same request hnd been made on previous occasions, but without success. The House could not make any grant unless special' permission was given. On reference to the programme" it will ba seen that the Committee hare introduced more rowing races this year, as 1 hey appoar to be very popular indeed j and the programme should certainly prova a very attractive one both for competitors and 'spectator*. Tho total amount of money prizes is £295, added to which are two cups. There is now every reason to believe that the Hepitta of 1880 will be every whit as successful as thoso of former years. " Messrs A. M'Donald and James Hill were added to the list of members of Committee. The Secretary was instructed to write to 'tin member for the town, asking him to endeavour, 1 if possible, to obtain a grant from tho Govern-
menfc; to apply to the Commissioner of Railways for permission to sell sites for confectioners' booths, &c., not publicans', and to advertise the programme as usual, after wbich the meeting adjourned.
