LOCAL AND GENERAL.

• . , Tub Cashel Steeet Ananias Again.— Wo are in a position to contradict the mendacious statement in The Press of this morning to tho effect that when recently at sea with Sir George Grey on board, the Hinemoa was, " for electioneering purposes, pushed bo hard," that she nowlies at the wharf with two boiler plates cracked, ahd that " all this is kept very quiet, the local papers saying nothing is the matter with the Hinemoa." The fact; is that nothing whatever is the matter with the Hinemoa, wifch fche exception of a slight starting of one of the hull plates, and that, although she was (quite fife for sea,

and had her steam up, Sir George Grey preferred coming down to Ohristchurch by the Penguin to mating use of the Hinemoa when, owing fco the Union Steamship Company's steamer running to suit, it was unnecessary to do so. As to the matter being suppressed in the local papers, we learn that, with Sir Georgo Grey's knowledge, he supplied the New Zealander with the above information, which was duly published in ifcs issue of last Monday. So much for the veracity of fche Cashel street Ananias, and its Wellington correspondent. Arcades Amlo, Lyttelton Borough Council.— The election of three councillors takes place to-day. Lasfc evening a public meeting was held, when five of the six candidates for municipal honours addressed the meeting, viz., Messrs J. Grubb, S. E. Webb, J. Higgs, W. Holmes, and J. W. Smith. There was a very large attendance, the majority evidently being anxious to get as much fun as po.sible out of some of fche candidates. Ashbitbton. — The delightful spring weather experienced lately at Ashburton, has been mosfc favourable for form and station work. Greafc hopes are entertained of a good harvest. Lost Child. — A child aboufc two years of age was found nt noon yesterday on the Museum steps and taken to the police depdt. The little thing has on a faded mouve hood with fur border, a maroon coloured jacket orer a pink petticoat, nfid white pinafore. Her boots are elastic side. Tiib Liberal Feeling at Kaiapoi.— At the close of tho Public meeting at Kaiapoi last night, his Worship the Mayor read a telegram stating that Sir George Groy and Messrs Andrews and Stevens were elected to represent Christchurch in Parliament. Tho announcement was received with a perfect hurricane of applause. Entertainment atSpnnyside.— At therequest of Mr Seager, the members of the Lyttelton Times Sick Fund Society who took part in the recent performance of " Society " at the Theat r . Eoyal, have decided to repeat the performance at tho Asylum, Sunnyside, on Saturday week. Mrs Walter Hill ha. kindly consented to giro her services on the occasion, and will take tho role of Lady Ptarmigant as before. TnKATRE Royal.—-" Diplomacy " was repeated laat night before a moderately large audience, and was as successful as on the previous nights of its representation. The comedy is a most enjojable one, and its merits fully account for its popularity. As played by tho Theafcro Royal Company, ifc cannot but be a favourito with the Christchurch lovers of tho drama. It is to be again presented this evening. Amberley Eace Meeting.— A meeting of the Amberley Eace Committee will be h?ld on Friday evening to arrange preliminaries for the noxt race meoting. Last year's meet was a great success, and with the balance in hand, £30 odd, and grand stand to the good, tho Committoo will have a good start. Tho course has been newly laid down in grass, and with other improvements contemplated, tho next race meeting should be an equal success with last year's one. The Coleridge Election. — A public meeting of electors in the Malvern, Sheffield, Waddington, Kimberley, Euesell's Flat, and Kowai portion of the Coleridge electoral district will be held in the Library Hall, Malvern, on Friday, at 8 o'clock p.m., to consider electoral mat teiv. The meeting will be open to persons of all shades of political opinion, and will be addressed by some delegates from Mr Wright's Central Committee on behalf of that, gentleman's candidature. As matters affecting tho residents of the above divisions will be brought forward, a large attendance is anticipated. Political Cartoons.— Two sketches have been exhibited at Amberley bearing on the Ashley contest during tho past week. One represents Mr Moorhouse carrying Mr Fendali on his back, with a sign-post " Amberley to Wellington "in the distance. The latter is saying "Many thanks, Sefton, fco you and your kind rich friends for helping me." This has, evidently, reference to questions asked Mr Fendali at some of the meetings by Mr Moorhouse's supporters, and which were nofc approred by a number of those preecnt, and are supposed to havo done Mr Fendali good. Another represents Mr Moorhouse as a lady looking in a looking-glass ond remarking, "I am afraid I'm getting a little ' Grey,' " and Mr Fendali, who appears also in lady's attire, agree ng with the remark, recommends a " false front." Public Meeting at Hohreltille. — A meeting of farmers in the neighbourhood of Horrelville was held at Moorbarton Farm on Sepfc. 3. Mr John Horrell was voted to the chair. The matter of a siding near the railway platform was felt by all present to be a very pressing need. It was pointed out that the land for tho purpose had already been secured, and wos now vacant. Eeliablo statistics were presented by those well acquainted with the district, which showed that over 20,000 bushels of grain, together with wool and other farm produce, were annually grown, and that these required to be conveyed by rail from Horrelville. It wa9 resolved — " That a petition bo forwarded to the Commissioner of Railways, requesting that the required accommodation be provided before tho coming grain season." Electobal/.— The poll for Christchurch yesterday resulted in a great victory for tho Liberal causo, whose candidates were triumphantly returned. The determined efforts of the Conservative party, however, brought one of their candidates level with Mr Andrews, [ while the closeness of the struggle is shown by the further fact that the Hon E. Richardson was only 23 behind. Full particulars of tho proceedings will be fouud in another column. — Tho Ashley election takes place to-day. The chief polling place is Amberley, whero the result of the poll will bo unofficially mado known in the evening ; but as it is at tho end of a long straggling district, the probability is that it will be late before ifc is announced. There are b.oths at Leithfield, Sefton, Ashley, Oust, West Evreton, and Oxford. Messrs W. C. Fendali^ J. A. Cunningham, and Mr W. S. Moorhouse are the candidates. Tho two former are local men, while Mr Moorhouae is a resident of Wellington. Thero are now 76 members of the new Parliament elected, leaving 12 Btill to be returned, and according to the carefully compiled list in another column, the Government can claim 40 supporters, the Opposition 33, while three aro dubious. It must now bo pretty clear that tho Liberal party is in the ascendant, and to-day's elections will probably still further increase their majority. A meeting of those interested in the North Canterbury Caledonian Society will be bold at M'Leam's Ho el,, Amberley, on Tuesday, September 16, at 7 p.m.
