The Star. THUESSDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 1879.

If we may be allowed to take a liberty with the advice given by Wolsey to Cromwzsi,li, we would earnestly counsel our Cashel street contemporaries to " put away untruth," to accept what ip, no doubt, felt as a most nauseating fact — the return of Sir George Grey at the top of the poll — with tho most cheerful grace possible, and resolve from tbis time forth to live a life of literary cleanliness. There can scarcely be a doubt of the faot that the efforts made to obtain tho great victory achieved yesterday were considerably aided by the audacious untruths and false issues put forward by the Cashel street faction through their political organ. Ib bas been felt to be a bad cause that required bolstering up by such means. We certainly hoped that when untruths could no longer deceive, when it was impossible for any gain to result, that the intelligence of the public would not be insulted in thia wanton manner. It appears, however, that the weakness of our contemporaries has settled down into confirmed habit and repute. We congratulate the Liberals of Christchurch upon the great triumph which they have achieved in the return of both the candidates they pat forward to fight their battle. We feel assured that their victory is the initiation of a new era for this city and its Bub urbs, if not for tho whole of Canterbury. We will not follow the • ungenerous attitude assumed by the Opposition through their political organ, and triumph, unduly. Ab we should have endeavoured to accept defeat — had ifc unfortunately oome to ob — with becoming patience, so in the hoar of victory a generous magnanmity should be displayed toward our fallen foes. The Opposition have long been a great power in Canterbury j they have neither ÜBed their power wisely nor woll ; they have regarded the people with supercilious contempt until " Oanierbury snobbery " was familiar in the mouths of men throughout New Zealand. The people bave shown their power, and henceforth no doubt they will receive a greater degree of respect. They will not begin now to ' abuse tbeir newly found strength to the unjust prejudice of their opponent?. The opposition have struggled manfully to hold their power. All their capabilities in organisation; all their experience and all their vast resources were called into requisition, and overy effort which it waß possible for judgment and foresight to put forth was made to hold their own against the power of the most eloquent tongue in New Zealand and the prestige of the greatest name in all Australasia. We confess that we have no desire to see the people oalled upon to fight another such battle again under similar circumstances. Our trust is tbat tbe new Parliament will give more power to the people, and thus establish their power in the future. Great, however, aa the strength of the Opposition has been they have been beaten and the people have triumphed. We need scarcely say that we rejoice exceedingly at the glorious result.
