-. r-fc— --. •: ■ i ' I An accident of a serious . nature happen*! to Mr John Wickoliffe on Tuesday evening,. It! appears that he and Mr William Adams were returning from Mr Hussell WarringWs sale atLceston, driving in front of them a foal which the latter gentleman, had purchased. When nearing Jlood'e oorner on the Leeaton road the foal attempted to turn hack, and in the endeavour to stop it the horses collided, and both riderg were Tiearily thrown. Mr Wickliffe received a severe wound in the head, and was picked, up in an unconscious state and taken home by Messrs E. Q. Stave-' ley and A. 0, WiUiaow, who were paenng at
the time. Dt Chapman was Ouiokly in attendance. On Saturday last an accident happened to Mva Cook, who lives near the Halswell, and by whose house a deep drain is out and timbered up the side. As Mrs Cook was reaching over the drain to look up the road, she over-balanced herself and fell head first in the drain. Her head came in contact with some sharp pieces of wood, which cut it fearfully, causing the blood to flow freely. The woman must have retained her senses for some time afterwards, as she sent her boy, of foupjears r to tell bis -father, who wanrort ing about , naif . a mile away for. a neighbour, to come home. The father, not thinking. that anythingwaswrong,didriotg6bomefor.aDo\it two hours afterwards, when he found ,Mj« Cook lying on the bed insensible, with' 4 counterpane wrapped round her head all saturated with blood. He called in a neighbour and examined the wound, and found that then it was bleeding freely. The hußband went to Prebbleton and got Dr Guthrie to go with him to his wife. The doetor sewed up the wound and examined his patient. He found that there were no bones broken^ but that she was in a dangerous state from loss of blood, and gave his opinion that had she not been a strong woman she must have died from the blood lost before anyone came to her assistance. Mrs Cook is in a very weak state, and not able to leave her bed. - An accident of a serious nature happened at Sheffield on Monday last. A child of Mr Reids, by some means, got in the way of a cow which was being fed, and the animal gored tho child very badly. The horn of the cow entering the child's mouth, and the point came out underneath the eye, creating a bad wound. Dr Meadows was called, but the child is not yet out of danger.
