THE COMMISSIONER OF RAILWAYS.

[Br THI.BGBAPH.] [SPECIAL.] . DUNEDIN, August 27. At the Chamber of Commerce, Mr Macndrew eaid he had not considered Mr Jonyer's report on the question whether he ihould be stationed at Dunedin or Christihurch. He thought it bettor that the matter should not be settled until after the election. There was no truth in the report that the railway workshops at Addington would cost £100,000. It was frimply the shifting of the Christehurch workshops there. Again, no work is being done there for this part of thn line, but, on the contrary, work ia being done at Port Chalmers for that section, and also for the North Island. Mr Conyers' report was in favour of his return to Duncdin, ind he (Mr Macandrew) thought that overnment would support it. (From the Own CorreaponHtntt) oftheLyttelton Tim«i.) DUNEDIN, August 27. In reply to a deputation to-day from the Chamber of Commerce, re Mr Conyers' removal, Mr Macandrew said : — " As far as Sir George Grey is concerned, I have heard that he made a statement alCliristchurch of which I do not know the purport. There is sot doubt that great consternation has been; created there by a report from Dunedin that Mr Conyers ia to be returned to the latter plaee, and when at Christchurch, en route for Dunedin, I was asked by Sir George if such, was the case, I replied that the matter was. not determined upon. Sir George tofin aßked, ' May I state that.' I replied that lie might certainly state that the mattes had not b«en settled. I may mention, thati some time ago I received a memorial 1 from you on this matter, 1 and I referred ib. to the Chief Commissioner himself to report upon. Just before I. left Wellington I received bis report, which is a very lengthy document, and I have had no time to look through, it. I think that in the present position of affairs, when the Government are, as. it were, under arrest, this is too important a letter to deal with right off tho. reel. I have* no. doubt that in this, or in any other matter, the Go* • vornment will deal as they think beat for the public service." ; . ' ' ,
