The Chronicle Bays it is understood that an action for libel is pending against the New Zealand Timet at the instance of Mr William Hutchison, Mayor of Wellington, for publishing an alleged slander in an article on Saturday last. ! The Directors of the D'Urville Island Copper Company have received the followingletter from their Manager, Mir Owen, at Newcastle: —" The last shipment of ore has been smelted; the average result being 20^ per cent. Mr Vale, the Manager of the English and Australian Smelting Works, considers this very satisfactory. The highest percentage of the celebrated Ballade Mine, New Caledonia, is only 17 per cent, and is con* sidered rich. All the exhibits havo boen insured. Tho official opening is fixed for Sept. 17. But ho thought that fully * monch will elapse before the exhibits can lie arranged.
