FOOTBALL.
NORTH V. SOUTH CANTERBURY.
Tho match between North and South Canterbury was played on Saturday afternoon at Timaru, and resulted in a victory for the No-th Canterbury team by one goal and one touch down, to nothing. The game was commenced by W. Millton kicking off for tbe North. R. Smith then ran the ball up, and a capital scrimmage took place, which proved the supprior strength of the Christchurch team, The first spell was mostly devoted to hard scrimmages, at the close of which the northerners got the ball over their opponents' line, and Lewin and Stringer both got on it, and scored a touch down. The second spell resulted in a number of tough scrimmages. Anderson away with the bull, and had a try at goal, but ho missed it, and only forced the South to touch down. After this, another force down was obtained by the North. Tho third spell was a very exciting one, and the play was excellent on both sides. Tho fourth and last spell waa also good, and the Southern team looked like winning it, but ib eventually resulted in a goal for the Northern team. Tho attendance on the ground wa. small.
