CHRISTCHURCH LOCAL BOARD OF HEALTH.
A meeting of the Local Board of Health wm held at the City Council Chamber* at 10 a.m., yesterday. Present— Hie Worthip the Mayor, and Gooncfllors Ick, Oapes Thomson, and Jones. The Mayor mid, that in accordance with instructions from the Local Board of Health, he had oonfmed with hit Honor the Snpcrin* tendent, who wae Chairman el the Central Board of Health, with reference to * letter received from Dr Patrick, by the former. His Honor coincided in the opinion expressed by htm (the Major), that & wm dctjiahle to appoint a Medwai Offioer, under Clause 14 of the Public Health Act. The dotiee of each offioer would hare to be defined by the Central Board. Hie Hooor thought they would merely be of a iteoeni character, instructing the Medical Officer to inspect each oaee of contagious disease as it arose, and report thereon to the Local Board, who would then be able to take any action that might be neeesMiy. He might say that both his Honor and himself desired it particularly to be known that it would be no part of the Medical OmWs duty to interfere in any j way with the private practice of the medical I gentleman in charge of the oaee, but simply I to satisfy himself as to the nature of the disease, and recommend such precautionary measures ac might in his judgment be deemed necessary to preserre the public health, and prevent the spread of oontagidn. The first business, therefore, was the appointment of a Medical Offioer. Councillor Thomson moved— "That Dr Deamer be appointed as Medical Officer to the Local Board of Health." Councillor Gapes seconded the motion. Some discussion took place as to the duration of the appointment of the Medical Officer. Councillor lok considered it would be better to appoint the Medical Officer for twelve months. Councillor Jones would like to know where the funds were to come from to pay the Medical Officer? • The Chairman : Out of the rates. Councillor Jones supposed the serrices of the Medical Officer would be available for the suburbs ? The Chairman said this could not be the case, as the various local Boards of Health in the suburbs— the Boad Boards— would have to arrange for their own Medical Offioer. The motion for Dr DeamerVi appointment was put, and agreed to. The Town Clerk was instructed to notify to the Central Board of Health that Dr Deamer had been appointed Medical Officer to the Local Board. Councillor Thomson thought it would be as welWf the originals were kept by the Local Board, and copies sent to the Medical Officer. The Town Clerk was instructed to do $o. The meeting then adjourned.
