CITY COUNCIL CUP.

The silver cup given by Mr W. Wilson during his term of mayoralty, and already competed for twice unsuccessfully during the present year, was again placed in competition on Saturday last with a' more successful result, though, in the interests of rifle shooting, not exactly the on-j that was desired. No. 6 Company Rifles were the winners of the cup last year, and only required to score another success in order to claim the trophy as their private property. This, it will ba seen, they succeeded in accomplishing, a iact very greatly to their credit, and certainly not more than the steadfast manner with which the company prosecutes rifle shooting or the somewhat notable unanimity that exists amongst the members deserved. The firing on Saturday was conducted in two different squads —one at noon, and the other at 3 p.m. The weather was very favourable up to nearing the last range, when a stiff south-wester set in.

The conditions were seven shots at each range, with Hythe position and targets, minimum score to win tbe prize 262.
