UNITED STATES.

The Tariff Bill, despite the efforts of the protectionists, has been greatly liberalised ia Congress. A pension of 3000 dola. per annum has been granted to Mrs Lincoln. A Bill has been brought into the Senate by C. Suraner, to provide for telegraphic communication between Asia and America. The cable would have to be 8500 mile 3in length, and the capital required is 10,000,000 dols. Two hundred Fenians of all factions united in an invasion of Western Canada. The Canadian Government adopted energetic defensive measures. President Grant issued a proclamation, I warning persons of the illegality of taking part in the invasion. The British troops repulsed the Fenians in two engagements, and the invaders lost one gun. The United States Marshal arrested the Fenian General Eiel, whose expedition was disavowed by the President of the Fenian Council. Prince Arthur marched to the frontier with the Volunteer companies. The Feniana, being attacked, fled precipitately. The United States Government ordered the arrest of the chief leaders, and the seizure of arms and ammunition. The English Ambassador expressed to President Grant the satisfaction of England with the course pursued by the American Government.
