Correspondence.

THE STREETS. TO THE EDITOR OF THE STAB. Sir,— A.B I was passing across Colombo street this morning, £ saw a crowd of citizens collected around some men driving an artesian well right •*• bang " in the street opposite the Bank of New Zealand. This well, it appears, is intended to provide the water for ihe new fountain. * The citizens collected seemed intensely surprised that the Council should take up so much of the street, and in such a. thoroughfare, for such a purpoße. Surely you will, I truH,6n behalf of the public, who use the streets, protest against such an absurdity. There is ample space close by, with a well already eunk, and why not utilise th*t ? It: must be obvious to every one that the encrraebinent on the street now taking place is of a moat serious character, and I sincerely [ trust that the Mayor and Councillors will, | when you if you.will kindly do so) call their attention to it, see the great injury that is being done to the main thoroughfare of the city. I trust you will kindly inspect the locus in quo, and interest yourself, hb you always do, on behalf of those who have a

right to the free and safe use of the public streets. Your obedient servant, A RATEPAYER. pfle believe, from reliable information, that there is really no encroachment on the street in this case. If our correspondent will take the trouble to inquire into the matter, he will find that the public rights are in no danger,— Ed. StarJ]
