CHRISTCHURCH. This Dat. (Before C. C. Bowen, Esq., R.M.) Attempt to Procure Abortion. — Joseph Osmond, alias Settle, was brought up on remand, charged with this offence, and was defended by Mr Joynt. Lengthy evidence was given, shoving that prisoner had been living with an unmarried woman, named Elizabeth Robotham, whom he had repeatedly promised to marry, in Napier, Wellington, and Christchurch, by whom he had one child, now living. They had been in Christchurch about three months, and on prosecutrix informing him that she was again pregnant, he procured some steel-drops, two doses of which he compelled her to take. Learning subsequently that prisoner was intending to get married to another woman, proseeutrix informed the relatives of the latter of her own condition, and subsequently laid an information for the attempt to procure abortion. Conclusive evidence in support of the charge was given, and prisoner was accordingly committed for trial. Robbery fhom the Person. — George Cook was brought up on this charge ; but, after some preliminary evidence, was remanded until Monday next.
