NxprEa, May 25, 6.55 p.m. Despatches from Colonel Whitmore state that operations against the TTriweras are stopped from the Taupo side, caused by the frightful country, and the lateness of the season, and also in consequence of the desertion of the Native force. The force haa returned to Fort Galatea. 50 men have been sent to Wakatane as a base, and 100 to Wairoa to co-operate with Major Herrick. Colonel Whitmore is expected to follow. Major Herrick is at Tukurangi, a few miles from the Lake, and he hopes to get there on Sunday. A boat and seamen had arrived from Napier, the pontoon tubes to follow, but every preparation to cross the Lake is too late. Messages have been received to-day from Titokura, the first station on the northern line, which is garrisoned by 15 men. The St. Kilda has gone to the Bay of Plenty, for troops, and is expected back to-morrow. Dunedin, May 25, 1.35 p.m. The attempt to transport young trout from Queenstown has been unsuccessful. The distribution of prizes to the volunteers took place yesterday. 6.55 p.m. The Select Committee on the Representation Bill recommend fresh electoral boundaries, also a redistribution of seats ; also twenty-four members instead of thirty-eight, as at present. %JJ?wo men have been sent to gaol for fourteen days, for assaulting the Rev. D. Stuart, whilst officiating at a funeral in the cemetery.
