NxprEa, May 25, 6.55 p.m. Despatches from Colonel Whitmore state that operations against the TTriweras are stopped from the Taupo side, caused by the frightful country, and the lateness of the season, and also in consequence of the desertion of the Native force. The force haa returned to Fort Galatea. 50 men have been sent to Wakatane as a base, and 100 to Wairoa to co-operate with Major Herrick. Colonel Whitmore is expected to follow. Major Herrick is at Tukurangi, a few miles from the Lake, and he hopes to get there on Sunday. A boat and seamen had arrived from Napier, the pontoon tubes to follow, but every preparation to cross the Lake is too late.
