CHRISTCHURCH CITY COUNCIL.
Tuesday, May 25. The Council met at the usual hour. The following Councillors were present :— Messrs Duncan, - Ruddenklau, Tombs, Sawtell, Calvert, Sheppard, and Angus. In the absence of the Mayor, Councillor Jameson took the chair. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. The receipt from various sources was announced of £89 16s Id, the overdraft being stated to be £511 2s sd. weekly pay-sheet and some other accounts were ordered to be paid. The amount, including- the quarterly scavenging account, was about £232. The City Surveyor reported that tenders would be submitted to the Council for shingling Worcester street, and for shingling the approaches to Worcester street bridge. The Gas Company had laid their mains along the Papanui road as far as the Junction Hotel. The labour gang had been employed in various useful works in the city. Some further extension of stone-channelling was still required. The tender of T. L. Lewis for shingling the approaches to Worcester street bridge at 3s 3d per yard, was accepted. It was decided that the lamp at the Junction Hotel should be lighted with gas. It was decided that stone channelling in front of Mr Lewis' premises, in Colombo street, should be carried out. A letter was read from the Avon Road Board, requesting permission to make a slight deviation in the road as at present formed. Referred to the -Public Works' Committee to report upon. A letter from the Sprcydon Board with <
reference to the drainage in the South town belt, was likewise referred to the same committee. offer of Mr Lord to pay Is per load for a certain quantity of night soil, for the purpose of deodorising it, was accepted, the soil to be delivered by the contractor at his premises. A letter from some of the inhabitants of Montreal street south, as to the drainage, was referred to the City Surveyor. Permission was granted to Messrs Hargood and Stoddart to lay down kerbing in front of their premises in Colombo street, they undertaking to defray the cost of the same. The report of the planting committee was brought up, received, and the clauses discussed seriatim. Councillor Tombs moved that the two blocks on the North Town belt, should be fenced in with iron wire. Councillor Sheppard seconded the motion. Councillor Angus moved as an amendment, that no money should be spent this year on the planting of the Town belts. The motion not having been seconded, lapsed, and the original motion of Councillor Tombs was put and carried. On the second clause being moved, that of planting the East town belt, Councillor Sheppard moved as an amendment, that the further consideration of the subject should be deferred for a week. The amendment was carried. A carrier's licence was granted to George Clarke. The Inspector's report was read and considered, and the Council adjourned.
